Celebrating our Community Volunteers

On Friday 17th April we celebrated the work of our amazing volunteers at the Town Mayor’s, Cllr John Roberts, Civic Reception at The Rufus Centre.
It was a pleasure to welcome and celebrate so many of the incredible volunteers who work tirelessly to make Flitwick – and our wider county – such a special place to live.
This year also marked the introduction of the Town Mayor’s Special Recognition Awards, created to honour the outstanding dedication of individual volunteers who go above and beyond for our community. These awards were proudly presented to five remarkable people:
⭐Marjorie Martin, who helps run the Ampthill and Flitwick Good Neighbour Volunteer Car Scheme.
⭐Anthony Kemp, Royal British Legion Flitwick, who organises and collects donations for the annual Poppy Appeal. He also poignantly reads the Kohima Epitaph at each Remembrance Service.
⭐Dave Ellott, who volunteers for an incredible range of organisations, including Carers in Mid Beds, Open Doors, Forget Me Not, NTC, Lunch Club in Toddington, Memory Club, Men’s Club in Flitwick, Jigsaw Club, and the Stitchers Group.
⭐Neil Yates, who recently retired from Flitwick Lower School. Neil worked at the school for 25 years as an ICT Technician, as well as supporting the whole school community at numerous events, including sports days, school discos, pantos at the Village Hall, and residential trips.
⭐Mark Rankine, who is dedicated to honouring and raising the memory of the two airmen who tragically lost their lives in a flying accident over Steppingley Road field during WW2. Mark has been instrumental in creating the memorial to the two airmen and continues to ensure they are not forgotten.
Congratulations to the recipients, and thank you to them, and all the volunteers, for making a real difference to our community.
During the evening, guests heard about the work of Citizens Advice from Simon Kelly, one of the Town Mayor’s chosen charities, and were entertained by the talented Jamie Williams.
An amazing £620 was raised during the evening for the Town Mayor’s Charity and Citizens Advice. We’re incredibly grateful to the local businesses who generously donated prizes, including Flitwick Jewellers, Flitwick Bowls Club, Temple Flooring Services, Howdens, Jewson, Costa Coffee, Saint-Gobain Weber UK & Ireland, and Johnsons Dry Cleaning.
